Best title/subtitle so far this year. I mostly use my bike, but I'm a really bad (impulsive, rule breaking) driver on my bike. Are driverless bikes coming soon?
Loved this one Camilo—such vivid and witty writing! As someone who failed her drivers exam twice (and hasn’t driven since then 🙃) you’re making me feel better about being off the road.
Ha! I also failed my driver's exam twice. I passed it on the third time. I cut this bit from the piece, but I REALLY needed to pass it because I had my Boeing internship which was an hour long commute. The only way I could get there was by taking a shared ride with other Boeing employees. Problem was that I had to make it to the meeting point by 4am. So my poor brother woke up at 3:30am for a couple of weeks to give me a ride to the meeting point.
If I didn't pass the third time, I would have had to wait 3 months before the next exam. I passed with the minimum score and asked the exam proctor for a hug 😅.
I loved reading this piece. I was waiting in the parking lot of a Chick-Fil-A to have lunch with a friend. My family got there before our friend did. We decided to stay in the car so that we didn’t have to wait in the restaurant. Plus the car was warm. As we are sitting in the car , a Tesla drives up. It drives towards our car but it doesn’t stop. I wanted to honk but I realized that there wasn’t a driver in the front seat. It stopped 6 inches away from my car. Getting pulled up by a driverless car was kinda trippy. I didn’t know what I would do. I couldn’t yell at the Tesla. Fortunately the driver and his family came out and hopped in the Tesla.
It interesting that driverless cars changed human behavior. Because quite frankly, getting a little exercise after chick-fil-a is needed
I love this story! It captures so perfectly the unease in this messy middle that we are in. Like, how do we engage or provide feedback to a driverless car? What are we supposed to do? All these little questions that emerge for something that seems so mundane. These are some of the things I was thinking about when I wrote this piece, but your anecdote illustrates the messiness of it all so perfectly. Thanks for sharing!
Loved this essay so much Camilo. This is the stuff people are afraid to say out loud but what they’re thinking lol. Every. Stereotype (about cars and drivers) Is. True.
…tesla drivers are the new prius drivers…iykyk…

The idea of driverless bikes makes me thing of a unicycle for some reason…which you’ve mastered. Now I’m curious about your lawless ways in Vancouver!
Bring your bike when you come up and I'll show you my illicit activities.

Thank you for reading, Sadia! Hope you stay safe on the road!
